Lilly Evista TV Spot...Creepy

I took a few minutes and turned on the tube last night. I saw something that completely freaked me out. No, not the most recent installment of Saw. Has anyone else seen the new TV commercial for Eli Lilly's product Evista? I am no health care expert, especially as it relates to osteoporosis, or how this product treats that ailment, however I do know when I am creeped out by a TV spot. When I saw this spot I thought I was watching a Stanley Kubrick movie, not a commercial for a drug that may help you if you have osteoporosis.

The way they had these actors standing around in bath towels with blank creepy stares on their faces in some ultra sterile environment with a cold, clammy narrator made me want to throw my TV out in the backyard and spray it down with holy water. Make it stop. Yikes!!

scary old people in towels staring at you...THAT's gonna get people to buy your product.

I think its about time the media started thinking that women over 23 might be attractive. Being over half-a-century myself, I'm glad to see this trend starting.

I also think that "selling" drugs to the uninformed public (instead of the medical community) is a shameful tactic.

Okay, the Evista ad bugs me, too, but for different reasons.

1) The voiceover rattles off the “warning” – women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing should not use Evista. If Evista is for post-menopausal women, pregnancy and nursing is not even in the picture. Unless I’ve lived 50 years and got it wrong, you can’t get pregnant if you’re post-menopausal.

2) Why, oh why are those women standing around with towels on looking so vapid and wrinkle-free? Every post-menopausal woman that I know has a few wrinkles and too much to do to stand around listening to a voice in the sky.

Yikes, I’m actually starting to listen to pharmaceutical commercials.

Hey Leroy, do you really think the women in the Evista spot were presented as attractive? I don't. I think they were presented as strange beings from another planet. I agree with you I think it is time women other than 23 year old barbie dolls are presented in the media as attractive, however I do not thik this Evista spot did the trick.

Anonymous, you made me laugh. Good post. I concur with your thoughts. Someone somewhere that was involved with this spot is saying to himself, "See, I told them we have people talking about Evista!" That may be the most disturbing point to this whole thing.
